Providence Plastic Surgery & Skin Center is excited to introduce SmoothGlo™. We understand that every person has their own preferences for managing cosmetic aging. If yours include addressing concerns without surgery, SmoothGlo is a treatment you may want to explore.
What is SmoothGlo™ and What Can it Treat?
The SmoothGlo procedure is a two-step treatment that involves IPL Photofacial technology with radiofrequency microneedling. This powerful duo addresses multiple common concerns simultaneously, such as:
- Rough or inconsistent texture
- Enlarged pores
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Sunspots and discoloration
- Red spots
- Loss of tissue volume
- Acne scars
These signs of aging and sun damage are not limited to the face. SmoothGlo treatment isn't, either. In addition to treating the face, SmoothGlo can be performed on the neck, chest, arms, back of the hands, and other areas of the body. The treatment is safe for types I-V skin tone as measured on the Fitzpatrick scale.
What Makes SmoothGlo™ Different from Other Skin Rejuvenation Treatment?
In recent years, clinical IPL treatments and microneedling treatments have been very popular. Individually, each offers specific benefits. SmoothGlo has expanded the value of skin rejuvenation by putting the two together. Beginning with the IPL photofacial, SmoothGlo gets right to work breaking up hyperpigmentation and spots caused by UV damage. This part of the process works through what is called photothermolysis, which reduces pigment problems and also stimulates the body to produce more collagen and elastin. The RF microneedling that follows permeates into the deeper layers of the skin. While the act of microneedling stimulates a healing response, the use of radiofrequency energy through the tiny needles boosts the production of skin-firming, volumizing collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. In fact, clinical studies conducted by Lumenis showed three times more naturally-occurring hyaluronic acid after the SmoothGlo treatment. Hyaluronic acid is the magic in dermal fillers. It is a sugar molecule produced in the body to hydrate and plump the skin.
What Results can SmoothGlo™ Achieve?
One SmoothGlo treatment stimulates tissue rejuvenation from deep beneath the epidermis. As the body repairs the micro-channels created during the microneedling procedure, the skin receives an abundance of the chemicals that promote a youthful appearance. As the name implies, SmoothGlo smoothes, firms, plumps, and brightens the skin on the face and body.
How Long Does a SmoothGlo™ Treatment Take?
The primary benefit of the SmoothGlo process is that it achieves outstanding results. A secondary benefit that our patients appreciate is that their treatment takes only about half an hour. The technologies incorporated into this treatment are powerful but also gentle enough to tolerate without numbing cream. Being able to skip the anesthetic step significantly reduces treatment time.
How Many SmoothGlo™ Sessions Will I Need?
Generally, SmoothGlo is planned as a series of three treatment sessions. We schedule one treatment a month for three months or more, depending on the amount of correction a patient wants to achieve. After that point, two treatments a year can nicely support the skin, provided that clinical treatment is a complement to sunscreen use and good skin care.
Do I Need to Prepare for My SmoothGlo™ Treatment?
No. The treatment is gentle enough to be performed just about any time of the year. Because minor side effects like redness and swelling can occur, we advise patients to schedule accordingly. Leave about a week in between the SmoothGlo treatment and any special events. Before undergoing this procedure, it is best to avoid too much sun exposure. Patients should be free of active skin infection, cold sores, or skin injuries at the time of their appointment.
Are There Any Risks Associated with SmoothGlo™?
There is very little risk involved in getting SmoothGlo treatment. Patients can expect the treated skin to feel warm for a few hours, similar to a sunburn. Mild swelling and redness can occur. After a day or two, pinpoint scabs may form where the microneedles had penetrated the skin. As cellular turnover is happening, the skin may feel dry and rough for a few days. These are all minor side effects that usually last no more than a week. To ensure the best results from treatment, we may recommend a post-procedure skincare regimen to follow while tissue regeneration is ongoing.
