Real Men Don’t Age, They Mature

The world of plastic surgery has widened immensely in recent years as more men have come to realize the benefits of cosmetic procedures. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than one million cosmetic procedures were performed on men in 2013, and more than 200,000 of those procedures were surgical.

As more members of the rich and famous set open up about their own plastic surgery experiences, men are discovering cosmetic procedures can be just as beneficial and acceptable for them as they are for women.

Dr. Gear takes a conservative approach when working with his male patients, to provide subtle results while preserving a distinctly masculine look. While men can opt for nearly any procedure in his practice, the most common procedures performed on men include:

Fat Reduction

CoolSculpting and BodyFX are minimally-invasive procedures that eliminate stubborn fat deposits that don’t respond to diet and exercise. Dr. Gear also sees many male patients that want liposuction to address fat around the waist and abdomen that won’t go away even with multiple visits to the gym.

Eyelid Surgery

Men tend to see some of the first effects of aging around the eyes, with drooping eyelids that give a perpetually weary look and even impair the line of vision. Eyelid surgery removes excess tissue and skin from the upper and lower lids, opening up the eyes and producing a refreshed, more youthful appearance.

Male Breast Reduction

This surgical procedure addresses a male condition known as gynecomastia or enlargement of the glandular tissue in the breast. Male breast reduction surgery removes the excess tissue to produce a flatter, more masculine body profile.

Non-Invasive Procedures

The most common non-surgical procedures for men are Laser Hair Removal, CoolSculpting, Botox, and dermal fillers. These treatments allow men to regain their youthful appearance without surgery or downtime. These procedures take just a short appointment to complete and offer subtle results that make you look younger without giving up your strong, masculine profile.

Botox/Dysport

Our male patients love Botox and Dysport just as much as the women at Providence. After all, crow’s feet, the 11s, and forehead lines don’t show a preference by sex. Botox and Dysport are made primarily of the botulinum toxin type A, the same bacteria that are responsible for botulism. This sounds scary, but it’s not. That’s because back in the 1950s scientists discovered that when a miniscule amount of the botulinum toxin was injected into a muscle, it made that muscle temporarily stop contracting. Botox was born from that research.

But Botox became a worldwide phenomenon in 2002 when the FDA approved it for treating wrinkles on the upper third of the face: crow’s feet, the 11s between the brows, and forehead lines. Since then, Botox injections have been the world’s most popular cosmetic procedure every year. Botox has been approved for cosmetic use in 78 countries.

Dysport is very similar to Botox, but it is somewhat thinner. This can make it advantageous for areas where Dr. Gear wants the product to spread out more under the skin.

Laser Hair Removal

Men have areas of unwanted hair — such as the back, upper arms, and neck — that have long been targeted with waxing and lasers. More recently, we’re having men come in to remove all their chest hair, leg hair, thin their beard, and other areas.

Laser hair removal involves using laser energy to damage the hair follicles in the treatment area. Once these follicles are damaged, they stop producing hair. The FDA has approved the use of lasers for “permanent hair reduction.” Due to hairs being in different phases of the growth cycle, laser hair removal at Providence usually permanently removes 85-90 percent of the unwanted hair in the treatment areas.

The key to getting rid of unwanted hair permanently is the hair follicle. For our laser hair removal treatments, we set the wavelength of our laser to match the melanin in your hair. Melanin gives our hair its color. We then direct short pulses of laser energy down onto your unwanted hairs. The melanin absorbs the laser light energy, and it instantly converts to heat. This heat then travels down the hair shaft into the hair follicle damaging or destroying the follicle and preventing future hair production.

Microneedling

Microneedling is a popular aesthetic treatment for men and women because it triggers the body to rejuvenate the skin from within. At Providence Plastic Surgery & Skin Center we use the SkinPen for our microneedling. The SkinPen has 14 oscillating needles that can be set to different penetration depths, depending on the patient’s skin and the treatment site. These depths can be varied up to 2.5mm. Our Master Esthetician Nina Crytser performs our microneedling treatments. She moves the SkinPen across the treatment area, and the pen’s 14 needles move up and down creating microscopic punctures through the epidermis, the skin’s outer layer, down into the dermis layer. Although the tiny punctures/channels begin to heal almost immediately, your body perceives the punctures as wounds and a wound-repair response is triggered. The body produces new collagen and elastin to send to the “wound” to heal it. Collagen is a protein responsible for the skin’s structural support, while elastin makes the skin firm, yet pliable.

Beyond triggering the wound response, the microscopic channels created by the SkinPen also make the skin more available to healing serums that can penetrate the skin far more effectively. This further improves the skin’s health and appearance.

CoolSculpting

Just like women, men have pockets of fat that are incredibly stubborn and resistant to any efforts to remove them. Foremost for men is the abdomen, but CoolSculpting has been approved by the FDA for eight different areas of the body for both men and women.

CoolSculpting was developed by a pair of Harvard scientists originally studying the effect of eating popsicles on the development of dimples in children. It turned out the cold killed the fat cells and created dimples, which appear when there is an absence of fat in the cheeks. From there, the scientists decided to apply the same thinking to fat pockets in adults. CoolSculpting was the result.

The concept behind CoolSculpting is simple — fat cells freeze at a higher temperature than other tissue cells, so deliver controlled freezing into targeted fat pockets and kill the fat cells while leaving the surrounding tissue undamaged. This freezing crystallizes 20 to 25 percent of the fat cells in the treated area. Those cells die and are flushed from the body naturally.

Since its FDA approval and debut in 2010, CoolSculpting has become the world’s most popular non-invasive body contouring procedure, having been performed on over six million people around the world.

Beyond triggering the wound response, the microscopic channels created by the SkinPen also make the skin more available to healing serums that can penetrate the skin far more effectively. This further improves the skin’s health and appearance.

CoolTone

The people behind CoolSculpting debuted CoolTone a couple years ago. CoolTone is a noninvasive treatment that strengthens and builds muscle tone by delivering Magnetic Muscle Stimulation (MMS) to the area. This energy induces involuntary muscle contractions and tones and defines the muscles and appearance in the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and arm areas.

The CoolTone applicator generates a magnetic field that creates a current when it passes through a conductive material. Muscles are good conductors of magnetic fields, unlike skin and fat, which are poor conductors. CoolTone’s MMS technology penetrates into the muscle layers and induces involuntary muscle contractions wherever the CoolTone panels are placed. How many muscle contractions? How about 20,000 in a 30-minute CoolTone™ session.

HydraFacial

Men deserve great facial skin as much as women and HydraFacial MD delivers just that. The HydraFacial MD treatment is a hydradermabrasion of sorts. It combines deep cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration, and antioxidant protection simultaneously. The treatment results in clearer, healthier skin without any discomfort, downtime, or recovery.

The HydraFacial delivers vastly improved hydration, while helping to eliminate or lessen the appearance of fine lines, hyperpigmentation, oil and congestion, and even creases in the nasolabial folds. Despite involving a light chemical peel and pore extraction, the procedure has no pain — it actually is a pleasant spa-like experience — and doesn’t have the usual redness and irritation that follows most peels/exfoliations.
