What Is Breast Reduction?
A breast reduction is a surgical procedure that reduces breast volume and changes its shape by removing breast skin and tissue. After removal of breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin during surgery, breasts will appear smaller and be lifted up with an improved and most aesthetically pleasing shape.
Breast reduction may work well for patients experiencing symptoms of heavy breasts:
- Headaches
- Neck strain
- Shoulder pain
- Lower back pain
- Poor sleep from discomfort
- Nerve pain and tingling
- Shoulder grooves from bra straps
- Irritated skin under the breast fold
It can also be a great option for people who struggle to find well-fitting clothes and bras or who have a poor self-image because of large breasts that often do not match their frame.
What Are the Benefits of Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction surgery performed by an experienced plastic surgeon can offer several benefits, including:
- Improved self-esteem and confidence
- Better posture
- Less back and shoulder pain
- More clothing options
- Higher energy levels
- Better ability to exercise
- Less or no skin irritation under the breasts
- Improved sleep

Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast Reduction?
You may be a good candidate for breast reduction if you:
- Have reached a stable body weight
- Are in generally good health
- Have realistic goals and expectations
- Want long-term, natural-looking results
- Don’t smoke, or can quit smoking before and after surgery
- Have completed breastfeeding and plan to have no more children (recommended, not required)
You can have a breast reduction at any age, but if you have the procedure done early in life, you may need a second surgery later.
What to Expect: Your Breast Reduction Procedure
Breast reduction surgery is done under anesthesia in our private, on-site surgical suite. Dr. Gear will make his incisions, using the type discussed in your consultation (typically lollipop or keyhole). Incision type depends on how much tissue you decide to remove, and Dr. Gear will help you select the type that offers the least amount of visible scarring.
Tissue and fat are then removed, while carefully protecting blood vessels and nearby nerves. Then, Dr. Gear removes excess skin to beautifully reshape and lift the breast for a natural, youthful look. Incisions are closed using sutures or skin adhesives and sometimes drains are placed to allow extra fluid a way out, avoiding excessive swelling.
In some cases, Dr. Gear may recommend liposuction, which can involve smaller incisions and have a faster recovery.
After Dr. Gear finishes your procedure, our team will move you to a recovery room, where you will awaken from anesthesia. There, your nurse will monitor your vital signs, give you medication for pain, and go over instructions on how to recover well at home.
You will have gauze or bandages over your incisions, covered by an elastic bandage or support bra to support your reconstructed breasts and minimize swelling.
