Meet Dr. Andrew Gear
Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon in Charlotte, NC
Dr. Andrew Gear is the founder and medical director of Providence Plastic Surgery & Skin Center, a state-of-the-art surgical and aesthetic practice serving Charlotte, NC, with concierge-level care. Known for his precision, warmth, and relentless curiosity, Dr. Gear brings decades of advanced training and generational medical heritage to every procedure he performs.
He is more than a surgeon; he’s a thinker, an innovator, and a visual artist. Whether performing complex body contouring or crafting a subtle, elegant enhancement, Dr. Gear’s goal is the same: to restore wholeness, confidence, and joy through tailored aesthetic care.
Plastic Surgery with Purpose
Dr. Gear’s surgical philosophy centers on tasteful, artistic changes that honor the connection between body and soul. His procedures are never about trend-chasing—they’re about helping each person feel more aligned with themselves.
He is a board-certified plastic surgeon, a RealSelf Verified Doctor, and a Charlotte’s Best and Charlotte BOB Awards winner. Dr. Gear was the first plastic surgeon in North Carolina to introduce enhanced recovery protocols, along with proprietary BIS or brainwave monitoring, to improve safety and outcomes in outpatient surgery. He was also the first plastic surgeon in the region to use fractionated radiofrequency energy and fractionated CO2 in facial resurfacing as well as structured saline implants. His innovations continue, from using new pre-, post-, and intraoperative protocols to improve safety to conducting in vitro biomechanical study of new breast implant irrigation solutions.
In plastic surgery, details matter. Lymphatic massage and engineered compression garments are a forgotten science in plastic surgery. Dr. Gear did not learn this during his training, nor did he see it when he arrived in Charlotte. After extensive research and personal experience, protocols of early and aggressive lymphatic massage and engineered compression garments are now standard of care in his office and beyond.
His most requested surgical procedures include:
Dr. Gear and this dedicated team also offer a range of skin treatments including:
- Botox
- IPL/BBL
- SkinPen

A Legacy of Medicine, A Life of Inquiry
Medicine runs deep in Dr. Gear’s family. His great-grandfather, Sir William Leishman, discovered the parasitic disease Leishmaniasis. His grandfather co-founded the World Health Organization. His father, a professor at Oxford, emigrated to the U.S. to become a biochemistry professor at the University of Virginia. One could say that Dr. Gear was raised on a steady diet of scholarship, service, and science.
This heritage instilled in him a lifelong commitment to discovery. Dr. Gear was drawn to plastic surgery not only for the limitless creativity it demanded but also for the intellectual expanse and breadth of the discipline itself. Even today, he refers to his practice as his “lab,” where he constantly refines techniques and embraces technologies that improve outcomes and safety and ultimately bring people joy.
Dr. Gear’s Education & Surgical Training
Dr. Gear completed all his early education, including undergrad and medical school, at the University of Virginia. While there, he earned a competitive research fellowship in burns and wound healing and contributed to innovations in burn care and plastic surgery under renowned mentor Dr. Richard Edlich.
He continued his training with:
- General Surgery Residency – University of Minnesota
- Plastic Surgery Research Fellowship – University of Minnesota (studied genetics of keloids)
- Three-Year Plastic Surgery Residency – University of Minnesota
- Craniofacial/Pediatric Fellowship – 6-month specialized training
- Cosmetic Surgery Fellowship in Los Angeles – 6-month intensive aesthetic focus
Dr. Gear’s rigorous training exceeds most plastic surgery paths, which typically include only two years of residency. His advanced and diverse background makes him uniquely qualified to perform a wide range of procedures with skill and nuance.
A Concierge Experience That’s Never Cookie-Cutter
At Providence Plastic Surgery, consultations with Dr. Gear are different by design. Patients are invited into a private lounge space (complete with custom artwork, rich textures, and a calming ambiance) where they can speak freely about their goals.
Rather than launching into medical speak, Dr. Gear begins with a simple, “Tell me about yourself.” He listens carefully, often guessing a patient’s background or connecting over shared stories. The exam that follows is gentle, respectful, and performed while the patient is still wearing a robe. Surgical plans are discussed afterward, when comfort and trust have already been established.
"Dr. Gear is amazing and truly one of a kind in Charlotte!"
He takes the time to really listen and looks at the whole picture, not just the focus area or whatever trend is popular. Unlike other surgeons who might suggest unnecessary add-ons, Dr. Gear is all about what’s right for you. I love his natural, European-inspired approach to aesthetics—it’s clear he cares more about making you look and feel your best than anything else. He’s unfiltered in his honesty which is refreshing and makes him easy to trust. I couldn’t recommend him and his incredible team more!

Dr. Gear gave his life to Christ in 1991 and considers his faith the foundation of all that he does. He has participated in medical missions around the world, including trips to Kenya, Guatemala, Peru, and China, and values the ability to serve both locally and globally.
More Than a Surgeon: Artist, Audiophile, Philosopher
When he’s not in the operating room, Dr. Gear can often be found behind a camera lens, in his garden, sipping a favorite coffee roast, or debating life’s big questions. He’s a lifelong audiophile, a left-handed visual thinker, and a lover of words and ideas. His photographic eye (and memory), passed down from his father, sharpens the way he sees proportions, shadows, and beauty in his surgical work.
In every sense, Dr. Gear blends the precision of a scientist with the instincts of an artist. That’s what makes his results so natural and his care so personal.
